[New] Green Buildings Innovation Cluster 2.0: 2nd Thematic Challenge Call

By: Guang Yu 03:55:07 20/06/2025

Background

The Green Buildings Innovation Cluster (GBIC) Programme serves as an integrated research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) hub under the Urban Solutions and Sustainability (USS) domain, administered by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA). In 2022, the National Research Foundation, Singapore (NRF) enhanced the programme through GBIC 2.0 with an additional $45 million funding allocation to BCA. This investment aims to advance research, prototyping, and demonstration of cutting-edge green building technologies, pushing the boundaries of building energy efficiency.

Objective

The Challenge Call supports the Singapore Green Building Masterplan's (SGBMP) ambitious target of "achieving 80% improvement in energy efficiency for best-in-class green buildings by 2030". This initiative drives innovation in green solutions to enhance building energy efficiency significantly.

Scope of Challenge Call

This 2nd Thematic Challenge Call focuses on energy reduction in four high-intensity building typologies:

- Healthcare facilities
- Retail developments
- Mixed developments
- Hotels

Building owners and developers are encouraged to undertake demonstration projects targeting a 75% improvement in energy efficiency compared to 2005 baseline levels.

For the healthcare sector specifically, we welcome solution providers and research institutions to develop:

- Innovative cooling technologies

- Advanced building ventilation solutions

These solutions should deliver energy savings of at least 25-30% above current best-in-class technologies, while demonstrating compelling return on investment potential for successful commercialisation and widespread adoption.
